What is Modified Bitumen Roofing?:
Modified Bitumen (MB) is a type of roofing material that is a hybrid between traditional built-up roofing (BUR) and modern asphalt roofing. It is designed to combine the advantages of both systems. Modified Bitumen roofs are commonly used on low-slope or flat roofs in commercial and residential buildings.
Modified Bitumen roofing typically consists of bitumen (either asphalt or coal tar) that is modified with polymers to enhance its performance. The most common polymer modifiers are APP (Atactic Polypropylene) or SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene). These modifiers impart specific characteristics to the bitumen, making it more flexible, durable, and resistant to temperature extremes.
There are two main types of Modified Bitumen roofing:
APP Modified Bitumen: In this type, the bitumen is modified with Atactic Polypropylene. APP-modified bitumen is typically applied using a torch to heat and melt the material, creating a watertight seal. APP-modified bitumen membranes may also come in a self-adhered form, where the bottom surface is covered with a peel-and-stick adhesive.
SBS Modified Bitumen: Styrene Butadiene Styrene is the polymer used in SBS-modified bitumen. SBS imparts greater flexibility and elongation to the bitumen, allowing the roofing material to accommodate movement and temperature variations. SBS-modified bitumen can be applied using hot asphalt, cold adhesive, or as a self-adhering membrane.
Modified Bitumen roofing systems often come in rolls, and the seams are either heat-welded (in the case of APP) or sealed with hot asphalt or cold adhesive (in the case of SBS). The roofing material may have a granulated surface or a smooth surface, and it can be installed as a two-ply system for added durability.
Modified Bitumen roofs are known for their durability, flexibility, and resistance to temperature extremes. They offer good waterproofing properties and are commonly used in both new construction and roof replacement projects.
